Mathematics

Mathematics trains you to think logically and analytically, solving complicated problems by studying patterns. With a B.A. or B.S. in Mathematics, you’ll learn about various fields, not only in physical science and engineering, but also in computing, business, economics, medicine, and the social sciences.

  • Our class sizes are small. Calculus classes have no more than 25 students and upper-division courses have between 5-15 students.
  • We provide meaningful opportunities for our undergraduates including research and arranging conference presentations.
  • We take students on study abroad trips—including places such as Malawi and Bletchley Park, England!
  • We have faculty who run their own journals, and students in our department have published their own work in these journals.

Admissions Requirements

Students who are accepted into Radford University are guaranteed admission into the Mathematics degree program.

Research Opportunities for Mathematics students at Radford

  • Students publish their own research papers in journals such as the Electronic Journal of Mathematics and Technology (eJMT).
  • Several of our students are part of the Radford University Honors College.

Careers and Internships

Mathematicians and statisticians continue to be the most sought-after and satisfying STEM careers. Graduates are not only sought after in the teaching profession, but also in industry.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall employment of mathematicians and statisticians is projected to grow 31% from 2021 to 2031, faster than the average for any other occupation.

Median pay is $96,280 per year (U.S. Bureau of Labor and Statistics)

In 2018, a group consisting of 6 students visited London and Bletchley Park as part of a study-abroad trip. The purpose of this trip was to study the mathematics behind how and where the Bletchley Park codebreakers, led by Alan Turing, broke the World War II German Enigma Cipher.
