For Federal Financial Aid programs, you must be enrolled for at least 6 credit hours. Some Alternative (Private) Loans allow enrollment in fewer credit hours.

William D. Ford Direct Loans
Students must have a completed and finalized FAFSA form on file in the RU Financial Aid Office before the deadline dates listed above in the Study Abroad term that you entered. Students must have a valid Master Promissory Note and Entrance Interview on file. Direct Loan disbursements can not be made until the beginning of the semester of the Study Abroad Program. The University charges are deducted from the first disbursement. Therefore, students need to have other resources to pay for personal expenses and advance deposits until the second disbursement is made. Students should set up direct deposit of Direct Loan funds through the RU Student Accounts Office. You will only be able to receive Direct Loan funds for summer if you have not used all of your yearly eligibility during the previous Fall and Spring semester.
Yearly Direct Loan maximums: Freshmen - $5,500; Sophomore - $6,500, Junior/ Senior - $7,500, Graduate Students - $20,500. Independent undergraduate students or dependent undergraduate students whose Parent Loan has been denied may be eligible to borrow an additional $4,000 - $5,000 in unsubsidized Federal Stafford Loan, depending on grade level.
Direct Parent Loan (PLUS)
PLUS Loan disbursements cannot be made until the beginning of the semester of the Study Abroad Program. University charges are deducted from the first disbursement. Therefore, students need to have other resources to pay for personal expenses and advance deposits until the second disbursement is made. Parents must complete the PLUS Loan application available on our website under forms and complete the Plus loan MPN at

website. Final approval must be received in the Financial Aid Office at least six weeks prior to the departure date. Information about the Plus Loan program can be found on our website under Direct Plus Loan Information.
Alternative (Private) Student Loan
In addition to this application, students must complete the Alternative Loan application through the lender and be approved by the lender. Applications can be completed on the Financial Aid website at www.radford.edu/~finaid. Final approval from the lender must be received in the financial aid office at least six weeks prior to the need for loan funds. Disbursements are more flexible with these programs. Many lenders will allow early disbursements for deposits with remaining loan funds to be disbursed by the beginning of the semester of departure. In order to allow for the early disbursements for summer please put the enrollment date as December 1st through July 31st.
