Did you know that nearly 26 percent of Radford residents and over 18 percent of area residents are living below the poverty threshold? Or that more than 40 percent of area children participate in the free and reduced school lunch program? Leaders of three community-based organizations that are working to address issues associated with poverty and low-moderate income individuals and families will offer perspectives on the social and human dimensions of poverty in the area and explain the changing socio-political climate of human services related to unemployment, poverty reduction, national health care reform and more. This changing climate also presents opportunities for higher education. Radford University faculty engaged in these issues will discuss their work, and collectively we will explore possibilities for the university to support efforts to alleviate the hardships of poverty, as well as revitalizing low-income communities. This session is offered in conjunction with the Scholar-Citizen Initiative.
