Campus Sustainability Policy

I. Purpose

Radford University is committed to being a model for sustainable campus practices and policies and recognized for our stewardship of economic, social, and environmental resources and for our academic commitment to sustainability. To accomplish this, the university has established and adopted the Campus Sustainability Policy.

This policy applies to all Radford University faculty, staff, students, visitors and contracted services and to all Radford University owned locations. This policy does not apply to facilities that are outside the scope of University control.

II. Definitions

Sustainability is generally defined as “meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs”. This definition is from the 1987 report of the World Commission on Environment and Development, published as Our Common Future and sometimes referred to as “the Brundtland Report.” In this report, the Commission highlighted the need for a balance between economic prosperity, environmental stewardship, and social equity.

III. Policy

The Sustainability Steering Committee recognizes that achieving sustainability will evolve as campus needs, technologies, and opportunities arise.
Radford University is committed to:

  • Creating awareness of environmental impacts, concerns, and practices that preserve natural resources
  • Establishing sustainability goals & implementing strategies to achieve the goals
  • Meeting or exceeding all Federal & State environmental rules & regulations

IV. Procedures

Responsible Parties
The entire campus community plays a pivotal role in how the University progresses in becoming a more sustainable campus. To that end, faculty, staff, students, and campus community members have a responsibility to consider the environmental, economic, and social impacts of their decisions. The Campus Sustainability Policy will be available for review on the Radford University Sustainability website.

Implementation

Each department head or supervisor should take the following actions:

  1. Communicate this policy to everyone under his/her supervision.
  2. Collaborate with other departments, organizations, local and regional agencies to foster sound environmental practices.
  3. Strive for continuous improvement and ensure the policy is applied to all university operations.
