While a high school student, Darius Cureton wanted to study forensic psychology and ultimately become an FBI agent. As an undergraduate student at a university in North Carolina, he became acquainted with the institution’s Division of Student Affairs and discovered a whole new path for his career.

His mentor, familiar with the welcoming community and outstanding academic programs at Radford University, encouraged Cureton to pursue a master’s degree in counselor education at RU. Online research, virtual tours and the guidance of his mentor led Cureton to apply sight unseen. He was thrilled when he was accepted into the competitive program.

“I took a leap of faith and joined the RU community, and I am glad I did,” he said. “There is no doubt in my mind RU was the best choice for me.”

As a highly involved student in campus activities while pursuing his undergraduate degree, Cureton wasted no time getting involved with campus programs as a graduate student at Radford University. He currently serves as a graduate assistant in the Center for Diversity and Inclusion to continue his hands-on experience in student affairs.

“I do not feel like a graduate assistant, but rather as if I am a member of the staff,” he said. “I’m respected and trusted and I am allowed to attend meetings, host programs, and work on presentations.”

After he completes his master’s degree Cureton plans to obtain a job in higher education and work within a student affairs department before pursuing a Ph.D. in Leadership Development. His long-term goal is to become a dean of students for a university.
