"Musica Viva" Headlines November Visual and Performing Arts at RU

RADFORD – The Radford University Performance Series will present “Musica Viva” featuring selected musicians from Virginia and North Carolina on Sunday, Nov. 8, at 3 p.m., in the Performance Hall of the Covington Center. Tickets are on sale now at Hurlburt Hall Information Desk. Admission is $18 general public, $5 children, $8 Virginia Tech students and free with RU I.D. Call (540) 831-5420 to learn more.

Art

• Art Department Halloween Party – Friday, Oct. 30,  5 to 7 p.m., Powell 200 (former Flossie Martin Gallery). "Spooktacular "prizes will be awarded for the most unique costumes. Come as a work of art or famous artist, wear a traditional Halloween costume or just come as you are. All students, faculty, staff and local citizens are invited. Prizes will be given at 5:30 p.m.

• Fall MFA Show – November 6 - 20; reception Friday, Nov. 6, 5 to 7 p.m., The Gallery at the Covington Center. Exhibition hours Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.  Free.

•  “Then and Now – Beyond the Tartan” featuring works by alumnus Bill LeSuer; November 9 - December 11, Gallery 205, Powell Hall. Exhibition hours Monday – Friday, 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Free.

Studio Theatre Series

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged), by Adam Long, Daniel Singer and Jess Winfield – part of the Studio Theatre Series; November 4 – 7 at 8 p.m., and November 7 at 2 p.m. Three RU actors deconstruct all of Shakespeare’s plays in a single evening of high-energy comedy. Originally created by The Reduced Shakespeare Company, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) is a roller-coaster ride of hilarity, so fasten your seat belt. This production contains adult language and humor.  Seating is limited. Free tickets are available beginning Monday, Nov.2, at noon, in the Box Office. Music

• Radford University Opera Ensemble – Saturday, Nov. 14, 2 p.m., Performance Hall in the Covington Center. Free. The Emu’s Tale, an opera for children, is set in an animal shelter run by Maura with the help of "Cat" and "Dog", the first animals Maura had rescued.  Cat and Dog bicker until Emu arrives at the shelter and they join forces, planning to drive her away.  The plot thickens as Emu tells the others of her life as a touring opera singer and Maia arrives on the scene to inform Emu that she has won The Million-Dollar Songbird Contest and discovers that she is Maura's long-lost sister, and all ends happily.

• Faculty Recital by soprano Jenice Riebe – Monday, Nov. 16, 8 p.m., Performance Hall in the Covington Center. Riebe is joined by special guest Teresa Ehrlich (piano), RU faculty Robert Trent (guitar) and Carla Copeland-Burns (flute) performing the works of Schumann, Previn, and Kirchoff. Free.

• Symphonic Band Student Conductor Concert – Wednesday, Nov. 18, 8 p.m., Performance Hall in the Covington Center. Free. The band will be led by select graduate and undergraduate conductors and features the music of prominent band composers including Morton Gould, John Barnes Chance, Howard Hanson and Jack Stamp.

• RU Guitar Ensemble Concert – Thursday, Nov. 19, 8 p.m., Performance Hall in the Covington Center. Free. The concert includes music from the United States, Italy, Ireland and Germany and features a work by student composer Paul Masinelli performed by the composer in collaboration with the ensemble.
