Dr. Tamara Wallace
Dean, College of Education and Human Development

Preparing students to become effective agents of change is a common thread running through our 31 programs. Undergraduate and graduate programs in the college’s six academic divisions - School of Teacher Education and Leadership, the Department of Health and Human Performance, the Department of Recreation, Parks and Tourism, and the Department of Counselor Education,  focus on developing responsive and engaged professionals who meet the real needs of people and communities.

The College of Education and Human Development is an integral part of the history of Radford University. While it represents the university’s foundation as a state-supported teacher preparation institution, it also represents the university’s expansion into a coeducational, comprehensive public university distinguished by a large selection of academic programs.

Besides its well known programs in elementary, middle and secondary education, the College now includes areas such as athletic training; sport administration; sports medicine; corporate/commercial fitness; health promotion; nutrition and dietetics; recreation, parks and tourism; counselor education; educational leadership; reading, early childhood education and early childhood special education; deaf and hard of hearing education; and high incidence disabilities.  Students in our college are “professionals-in-training” in the helping professions. We attract faculty and students who have a strong commitment to serving others.

Our faculty is renowned for partnering with practitioners to implement preparation programs grounded in the daily realities of the profession.  Faculty and students are engaged in projects that are responsive to the needs of communities, families, and individuals.

We are growing and renewing: over 75 percent of our faculty has been hired since 2000. They are coming in with enthusiasm and energy and with current experience and research in their fields.
