ESHE Majors/Concentrations Minors Faculty Advising Resources
bzeakes

It is the belief of the ESHE faculty and supported through extensive research that the best health insurance is maintaining a wellness lifestyle.  Our responsibility toward that goal is to prepare future professionals in the areas of fitness, nutrition, health promotion, Physical and Health Education Teaching, sport management and careers in exercise/sport safety and rehabilitation.

We take our responsibility seriously.  We offer dedicated faculty and contemporary programs that prepare students to be leaders in careers that are essential to the overall health and well-being of all individuals.  Our programs offer students a variety of experiential opportunities from pre-professional fieldwork, clinical rotations, to the capstone experience of either internship or student teaching.  All students entering their junior year must maintain a 2.5 grade point average in order to successfully progress toward internship and graduation.

Programs in Athletic Training Education (accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE)), Nutrition and Dietetics (accredited by the Council on the Accreditation for Dietetic Education (CADE)), Physical and Health Education Teaching (accredited by the National Association of Sport and Physical Education  (NASPE) and the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE)) and Sports Medicine (pre-therapy/pre-graduate education) have required admission standards which must be met and maintained to successfully  graduate from the program.

The department also offers programs in Health Education/Health Promotion for students who seek jobs in community, worksite, or school health (non-teaching); Fitness Strength and Conditioning for students interested in working with the fitness and performance training industry; and Sport Administration which provides a multidisciplinary study for leadership and administrative positions in the sport industry.

As mentioned, we do more than deliver quality academic programs.  We create the next generation of professionals.  We do this by engaging our students in pre-professional experiences.  For example, ESHE students and faculty collaborate to provide children’s activity and youth sport programs for the community, participate in a variety of workshops leading to professional certifications, work with the RU faculty-staff programs such as fitness/wellness and self-defense, and collaborate with faculty in conducting  field-based research and honor’s projects.  These experiences strengthen the educational experience and allow faculty, students, and community to work as partners.

As faculty in the Department of Exercise, Sport, and Health Education, we pay attention to our vision…Building Physically Active and Healthy Lifestyles…One Person at a Time.  Our impact is felt through the preparation of each person - the ESHE student-leader.  We hope the ESHE student will find value in our programs and an exciting and rewarding career in our dynamic field.
