Curriculum

All requirements for the Recreation, Parks, and Tourism are outlined below:

  • Students must take Core Curriculum, major requirements, course work for one of the three concentrations, and RCPT electives.
  • New or transfer students accepted for admission by Radford University must declare Recreation, Parks and Tourism as a major prior to the first day of classes. All others follow the policy below.
  • Students must have a GPA of 2.5 or higher at Radford University in order to declare the RCPT major. A minimum cumulative and major GPA of 2.5 are required to enrolled in RCPT 413 - Professional Issues in Recreation, Parks and Tourism and RCPT 470 - Internship.
  • The major GPA is calculated using all RCPT courses.

Core Curriculum Requirements (43-45 credits)

Are required to take the following courses and are advised to take them as part of their Core Curriculum requirements:

For Recreation Therapy majors:

  • BIOL 105 - Biology for Health Sciences
  • PSYC 121 - Introduction to Psychology

For Outdoor Recreation majors:

  • RCPT 112 - Activity Leadership and Analysis
  • RCPT 210 - Introduction to Recreation, Parks and Tourism
  • RCPT 230 - Introduction to Outdoor Recreation
  • RCPT 313 - Program Planning in Recreation, Parks and Tourism
  • RCPT 319 - Introduction to Recreation Therapy
  • RCPT 328 - Planning and Operations
  • RCPT 365 - Legal Liability and Risk Management
  • RCPT 413 - Professional Issues in Recreation, Parks and Tourism
  • RCPT 414 - Recreation Workshop
  • RCPT 423 - Recreation Administration
  • RCPT 432 - Research and Technology Applications in Recreation, Parks and Tourism
  • RCPT 470 - Internship

Majors also must fulfill one of the following concentrations:

Recreation Therapy Concentration (24-26 credits)

  • BIOL 105 - Biology for Health Sciences
  • (BIOL 104 is recommended)
  • PSYC 121 - Introduction to Psychology
  • PSYC 230 - Lifespan Developmental Psychology
  • PSYC 439 - Abnormal Psychology (SS Core)
  • RCPT 340 - Processes in Recreation Therapy
  • RCPT 342 - Assessment in Recreation Therapy
  • RCPT 344 - Program Design and Evaluation in Recreation Therapy
  • RCPT 445 - Professional Advancement in Recreation Therapy

6-8 credits from:

  • BIOL 310 - Human Structure and Function I
  • BIOL 311 - Human Structure and Function II
  • BIOL 322 - Human Anatomy and Physiology for Pre-Nursing Majors

Outdoor Recreation and Leadership Concentration (19 credits)

Choose from the following two options:

Option 1

  • RCPT 317 - Adventure Programming (3)
  • RCPT 325 - Natural and Cultural Interpretation (3)
  • RCPT 331 - Outdoor Living Skills (3)
  • RCPT 421 - Challenge Course Programming (3)
  • RCPT 430 - Outdoor Leadership (3)
  • RCPT 460 - Wilderness First Responder (4)

Option 2

  • RCPT 325 - Natural and Cultural Interpretation (3)
  • RCPT 421 - Challenge Course Programming (3)
  • RCPT 460 - Wilderness First Responder (4)
  • RCPT 476 - Wilderness Institute (9)

 

B.S. Requirements:

Six to eight credits of course work from ANTH, ASTR, BIOL, COMS, CRJU, GEOG, GEOL, MGNT, MKTG, PHSC, PSYC, SOCY or SOWK. Radford University has an articulation agreement with the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS) whereby NOLS courses may be transferred for academic credit.

Tourism and Special Events Concentration (18 credits)

12 credits of Principle Courses:

One 3-credit Principle Course (above) at RU and 9 credits from:

  • RCPT 480 - Global Exchange in Recreation, Parks and Tourism
  • RCPT 481 - Tourism Institute

Six credits of Supportive Elective courses from: ACTG, ANSC, ASTR, BIOL, BLAW, COED, COMS, CRJU, ECON, FORL, GEOG, GEOL, LEAD, MGMT, MKTG, NUTR, PHSC, PSYC, SOCY or SOWK.
