The Second Education Concentration is intended for students who wish to become secondary school teachers. Many professional education courses are required along with Mathematics and Statistics courses. Students must be admitted to the Teacher Education Program and pass the Praxis I exam before they can enter “the block” (a block of courses taken together in the fall semester of senior year); pass the Praxis II mathematics test before they can student-teach (spring semester of senior year); and pass the Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment before they can be certified to teach in Virginia. Students should contact the Field Experience Office in the College of Education and Human Development in their first year of study.
The Praxis exams are developed by the Educational Testing Service, and some information about them can be found on the ETS web site. The Praxis II test required of prospective teachers is the Mathematics Content Knowledge test (0061). There is also a VCLA web site with information about that test.
