Dr. W. Dayl Burnett is a native of Falls Church Virginia, and holds a BA and MA in Music from Virginia Tech, and a DMA from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. He was a member of the U.S. Air Force Academy band and director of the “Shades of Blue” jazz ensemble at the Military Airlift Command Band, Scott Air Force Base Illinois. Dayl has also been a featured soloist with the Virginia Symphony and Roanoke Symphony Orchestras. For nearly twenty years he was principal trombonist of Opera Roanoke and the Roanoke Symphony Orchestra. Recently, Dayl has performed with the Atlantic Coast Orchestra, the Florida Grand Opera and the Palm Beach Pops. In addition to teaching at Radford University, Dayl has served on the faculties of Arkansas Tech, Virginia Tech, Roanoke College, Christopher Newport University, Ferrum College, and the College of William and Mary. Some notable musicians and personalities that Dayl has performed with include Bruce Hornsby, Arturo Sandoval, Tony Bennett, David Sandborn, Doc Severinsen, Billy Taylor, the Moody Blues, and has recorded with Ray Charles. In addition, Dayl has performed with the internationally acclaimed Empire Brass Quintet.
