Eight Numbers for Over 35 Dancers

SoundStories.11

Over 35 dancers will perform on the Bondurant Auditorium stage during Radford University’s Fall Dance Fest 2013 from Oct. 17 to Oct.19. This annual event features eight dance works of various styles choregraphed by Department of Dance faculty and guest artist, Mikhail Ronnikov.

“Heads & Tails,” choreographed by professional dancer Mikhail Ronnikov, was created specifically for eight RU dance majors. An excerpt of this delightful contemporary ballet piece will be performed in the Fall Dance Fest! The complete work will premiere in the “Evening of Ballet” production directed by Inessa Plekhanova in November.

Excerpts from the dance/theatre piece “The Shadow Waltz” by Deborah McLaughlin will be presented. Funded by a RU faculty research grant through the College of Education and Human Development, McLaughlin collaborated with Appalachian cultural scholar, Dr. Theresa Burriss. This piece uses Appalachian miners’ oral histories as well as McLaughlin’s own research as seed material. The complete work will tour to The College of New Jersey.

Rounding out the Fall Dance Fest are works by Margaret Devaney, Chair of the Department of Dance, Associate Professor, danah bella and new Assistant Professor, Amy VanKirk.

“The Gamines,” choreographed by Devaney and accompanied by the inspiring and uplifting music of the Piano Guys, allows eight female dancers to express their mischievous charm and elegance without all the sophistication. Devaney’s new piece is still a mystery to her and verbal articulation is not forthcoming at this time!

About bella’s piece, the choreographer says, “Based on the annual pilgrimage on Dia de la Virgen in Mexico, ‘scattered. Place’ embodies the physical and emotional suffering one endures on such a spiritual journey.” The dancers in this artistic offering are be joined by acclaimed local singer/songwriter Kat Mills and John Priestley.

Fuerza!Fuego” is one of the two pieces being premiered by VanKirk. Fusing together jazz and Latin ballroom styles, it features six female dancers and the entrancing beats of the Bajofondo Tango Club. VanKirk’s other number, “Jivin’ on the Lam,” utilizes tap and unique electroswing rhythms.

She says it “features 12 mischievous tappers having a night out on the town.”

Dancers who are performing in the Fall Dance Fest include: Haley Beatley, Erin Bradley, Katy Brown, Taylor Carper, Shannon Cornerford, Sarah Cooper, Madison Del Rio, Ashley Dobrogosz, Brittany Fritchman, Rachel Gattoni, Aja Gore, Sarah Hayes, Olivia Henley, Emily Hinkle, Shandi Honaker, Caitlin Horan, Kristen Jameson, Doina Jeter, Amy Livesay, Haley Long, Lauren Martin, Iesha McDonald, Chelsea McGinnis, Jacki Miller, Alexis Miller, Alexa Mollica, Sarah Oliver, Machijah Persaud, Haley Race, Allison Richter, Christa Rockney, Kelsey Rupp, Christina Sanchez, Kelsey Sawder, Grace Smiley, Arianne Thompson, Dara Watson, Jessica Wheeler, and Rachel Wyatt.
