Looking the Part – The Cast of Radford University’s Major Barbara

Sarah Meade as Barbara Undershaft – A major in the Salvation Army

There are no fitted jeans and t-shirts in the early 20th century.  There are layer upon layer of undergarments, fabric, and accessories that denote specific classes and their style. The Radford University theatre department has made note of these and showcases this knowledge in the upcoming production of “Major Barbara.”

Fifteen actors leave behind the causal college and rehearsal clothing to don attire that emulates the first decade of the 1900s.

Helping them to acquire an accurate appearance are Monica Weinzapfel, costume designer, along with costume shop assistants and a wardrobe crew. The costume shop assistants under the direction of Amanda Phillips, shop manager, are doing the make-up, hair styling, and the building of costumes.

On the first full dress rehearsal of the production, the cast posed for portraits that imitate the vintage photographic style that was prevalent during the period for which the play is set.

Performances of "Major Barbara" in the Pridemore Playhouse will be at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, April 18 through April 20, and on Sunday, April 21, at 2 p.m. Tickets are $8 for general admission, $5 for RU faculty and staff, $5 for seniors over 55, $5 a person for groups of more than 10, and free to students with an RU ID.

Tickets are on at the Porterfield Box Office or by calling (540) 831-5289. The box office is open Mondays through Fridays, noon to 6 p.m., and one hour before each performance.
