Pianist Martin Jones Includes RU Performance During Tour

Martin Jones, one of Britain’s most highly acclaimed solo pianists, will present a concert at 7:30 on Thursday, September 26 at Radford University’s Performance Hall at the Covington. This is part of a tour of Virginia, Maryland and North Carolina.

The concert will include works by Claude Debussy, Samuel Barber, Igor Stravinsky and will feature the US premiere of works by Virginia composer Bruce Mahin. Mahin is a faculty member of Radford University.

A prolific recording artist trained at London’s Royal Academy of Music, the Jone’s repertoire currently includes over 35 CDs available on the Nimbus recordings label. He has recorded the complete works of Claude Debussy, Felix Mendelssohn, Johannes Brahms, Percy Grainger, Szymanowski , Igor Stravinsky, and the sonatas of Alun Hoddinott.

His award-winning recordings (Best Instrumental Recording 1996, the Classical Indie Award in 2000) have recently focused on Spanish composers of the early 20th century.

He gave the first performance of the revised version of Alan Hoddinott’s “Third Concerto” at the 1974 BBC Promenade Concerts, and recorded Hoddinott’s “Second Concerto” with Andrew Davis and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra for Decca.

This concert is sponsored by the Eta Upsilon chapter of Sigma Alpha Iota music fraternity with funding support from the RU Club Programming Committee. The public is welcome and admission is free.
