On the evening of Oct. 26 before a rapt crowd of nearly 800 spectators, Radford University theatre students took part in the first Virginia Theatre Association College Theatre Showcase. One of eight Virginia universities participating, six RU student actors and technicians presented two scenes from “The Trestle at Pope Lick Creek.”

VTA invited each school to present work representing their programs at this fall’s annual conference in Reston, VA. The showcase entries were limited to 15 minutes and varied among previously produced works, works currently in rehearsal, pieces devised especially for the showcase and even class projects.

RU offered two scenes from a play that ran on campus earlier this semester. This had the distinction of being the only student-directed piece of the evening.

A large number of conference attendees are high school students so the showcase was, in part for them to see the work of schools they might be considering. In addition, it provided the opportunity for participating college students to interact with their counterparts at other Virginia colleges/universities.
