Department of Art

Steve Arbury, professor: After attending an international conference on the visual and performing arts that he organized in Athens, Greece, he worked on an archaeological dig at an Etruscan site in Italy on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Richard Bay, professor; Drew Dodson, associate professors; Alison Pack, associate professor and Nick Umstead, assistant professor: taught at Governor’s School.

Z.L. Feng, professor: “China Watercolor” website featured him in an article.

Chris Lively, assistant professor: won a purchased award for “Slip Jar” at the VMRC National Annual Juried Multimedia Exhibition at Harrisonburg, Va. He also received a third place award for “Bowl” at the National Contemporary Clay 2014 Fifth Biennial Exhibit at Western Colorado Center for the Arts.

Ken Smith, associate professor and Shaun Whiteside, assistant professor: both had work juried into the 15th Annual Juried Show at the Nelson Gallery in Lexington, Va. The show is on exhibit between July 30 and Aug. 29. There is an opening reception Aug. 1 from 5-7 p.m.

Department of Dance

danah bella, interim chair and professor: directed and taught Governor's School; taught master classes at Oakley Ballet Center in Ventura, Ca; did a guest artist residency at Studio Arts for Dancers in Knoxville, Tenn;  was one of six faculty members asked to teach as part of  RU's new ACCELERATE summer program for incoming freshman; Dr. Bill Kennan is traveling through the Far East this summer and as part of his journey will be showcasing examples of RU’s best online course design – her dance appreciation course is one of the classes that will be showcased.

Aleksey Plekhanov, assistant professor:  taught Radford Youth Ballet International Summer Intensive Program (RUBY ISIP) and Governor's School.

Inessa Plekhanova, associate professor: directed and taught RUBY ISIP; taught master classes at Roanoke Ballet Theatre; taught at  Southwest Virginia Ballet Summer Intensive Program in Roanoke.

Amy VanKirk, assistant professor: taught RUBY ISIP and Governor's School and is choreographing "Little Mermaid" for Alluvion Stage Company in Lynchburg, Va.

105th American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Annual Conference and Expo

Farrell Doss, professor; John Jacob; associate professor and Kathy Mitchell, professor: attended the 105th American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences Annual Conference and Expo in St. Louis, June 25-28, 2014.

Doss, Jacob and Mitchell presented original apparel designs accepted into the Juried Design Showcase and Exhibition. 

A CVPA Faculty Research Grant sponsored Mitchell’s original apparel design titled “Flowing Through Time.”

At the Apparel, Textiles, and Design meeting, Doss and Mitchell were elected as coordinators for the Annual Juried Design Showcase and Exhibition.

Doss presented a research poster co-authored by Associate Professor Tammy Robinson titled “Luxury Perceptions of Accessible, Intermediate, and Inaccessible Prestige Handbags.” A CVPA Faculty Research Grant sponsored this research project. 

Doss had the honor of hosting a black-tie gala fundraiser “The Little Black Dress and Tie Gala and Showcase.”

Doss’ and Mitchell’s “Little Black Dress Designs for Barbie” won first place honors at the juried design event.

Rob Sanderl, assistant professor: is performing as a percussionist this weekend for Week III of the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra.

Robert Trent, professor: performed on the "Play Away The Hunger" concert benefiting Radford Food Pantry.

Trish Winter, assistant professor: presented work at an international conference: her collaborative work from her CVPA Faculty Research Grant was one of the featured presentations at the conference.  Click here to read more.

Al Wojtera, chair and professor: performed as the timpanist for the Week I Wintergreen Festival Orchestra services July 7-13, directed by guest conductor Carl St. Clair.

Tommy Iafrate in Shanghai

Department of Theatre

Tommy Iafrate, assistant professor: is the continuing as the artistic director of the Clinton Area Showboat Theatre, a summer stock company in Clinton, Iowa. He also traveled to China as musical director for Carthage College’s “Next to Normal” and a shortened version of “Once on this Island.”

Jennifer Juul, associate professor: co-presented a workshop on Shakespeare and Lessac voice work at the Association for Theatre in Higher Education conference in Phoenix, Arizona.

Jimmy Ward, assistant professor: designed scenery for Mill Mountain Theatre in Roanoke's upcoming production of "To Kill a Mockingbird."  He also designed scenery for "The Cat in the Hat" and "Madeline's Christmas" for Roanoke Children's Theatre, showing later this fall.

Wesley Young, associate professor: wrote and directed the RU Quest play. He also portrayed Herod in TheatreLAB Richmond’s “Salome: a Wilde Experiment.” Click here to read more. In addition he is one of 16 applicants chosen to attend the annual Kennedy Center Directing Intensive in Washington, D.C.
