Understanding Poverty in the NRV

Friday Aug 16
10:00 AM - 11:30 AM

Facilitators: Timothy Filbert, Terry Smusz, Eric Bucey, and Vicky Collins

Did you know that nearly 26% of Radford residents and over 18% of area residents are living below the poverty threshold? Or that more than forty percent of area children participate in the free and reduced school lunch program? Leaders of three community-based organizations that are working to address issues associated with poverty and low-moderate income individuals and families will offer perspectives on the social and human dimensions of poverty in the area and explain the changing socio-political climate of human services related to unemployment, poverty reduction, national health care reform, and more. This changing climate also presents opportunities for higher education. RU faculty engaged in these issues will discuss their work, and collectively we will explore possibilities for RU to support efforts to alleviate the hardships of poverty as well as revitalizing low-income communities. This session is offered in conjunction with the Scholar-Citizen Initiative.
