After earning a bachelor’s degree in Spanish, Stephanie Jackson knew she wanted to pursue a master’s degree. With a lifelong love of language and a keen interest in understanding the process by which humans acquire language, the Communication Sciences and Disorders (COSD) program at Radford University was a perfect fit.

As a resident of Southwest Virginia, Jackson knew of the university and had heard about the prestigious COSD program. One visit to campus convinced her Radford University was the right place to complete her education.

“After touring the Radford University Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic (RUSLHC), and meeting the faculty within the COSD department, I knew Radford was the place for me to complete my master’s degree,” she says. “The faculty really made me feel like a priority. They provided me with wonderful information about the program, as well as their research interests. I knew that they were the type of mentors, supervisors, and professors that I wanted to guide me and help create my career as a speech-language pathologist.”

With her undergraduate degree in Spanish, Jackson says, “I have a close connection to the process of language acquisition. Speech language pathology is the culmination of all my interests. It combines the sciences, language, education and counseling, among other facets of the field. After observing my first speech-language pathologist, I knew it was the career for me.”

Jackson notes that she appreciates Radford University’s Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic. “It has enriched my graduate experience at Radford University in so many ways,” she says. “The opportunity to have clients with the disorders you are learning about in class gives you a comprehensive, hands-on learning experience.”

Jackson’s career plans and interests lie within diagnosing, treating, and counseling adult populations with specific interests in the fields of aphasia and other neurogenic disorders, traumatic brain injuries and motor speech disorders.
