Senior from Fairfax, Virginia
Major: Business
Campus Involvement: Honors Academy, Zylphia Shu-En Kirk Scholars Program

Coming from a large, suburban school district, Katrina Koussis knows what it is like to learn in crowded classrooms with teachers who don’t have time to get to know their students. She chose Radford University because it was the exact opposite.

“The professors at Radford genuinely care about you. They know your name, your handwriting, your style — everything,” Koussis said.

Small class sizes have allowed her to receive one-on-one attention in her studies. Thanks to a professor learning about her interest in international business, Koussis was one of eight students invited to apply to participate in Radford’s Zylphia Shu-En Kirk Scholars Program.  She was one of the first freshmen ever accepted.

Through the Kirk Scholars program, Koussis will spend four semesters studying Mandarin Chinese before going on a month-long study abroad experience in China. She believes the trip will not only provide an incredible learning opportunity, but also make her an attractive prospect to future employers.

Her personalized academic experience is only one of many reasons she “fell in love” when she stepped onto campus. She particularly appreciates the warm and welcoming community and the friendly faces she encounters on and off campus.

“I like that I know everyone’s name, and that if I need help, it’s only a foot away,” she said. “I like that I am Katrina to my professors and classmates, and not just a nameless face in a classroom.”
