When searching for a college, Lauren Taylor knew she wanted to find a public institution with a strong art education program. While there were several options in Virginia, an inspiring setting, a diverse student body and a small student to faculty ratio made Radford University rise to the top of the list. What ultimately sold her was the close-knit campus community.

“Radford has an incredible sense of community, which makes a very welcoming environment for any student,” she said. “I have been able to work closely with faculty and staff from every part of campus, not just within my major.”

Extraordinary experiences have enriched Taylor’s education. Last spring, she earned a spot in the Juried Student Art Show held in the Covington Center for the Arts. She also had the opportunity to create and present lesson plans at the Virginia Art Education Association Conference. Her presentation centered on children’s books with minimal or no text. The lesson plans encouraged children to think beyond the text and create a meaningful piece of art that derived from the storyline of the book.

“Radford University has helped me grow as an individual, a scholar and a leader.  I feel my experiences here have certainly helped my preparation for life after graduation,” said Taylor.

Meanwhile, Taylor has supplemented her academic experience by exploring numerous campus organizations and opportunities. In addition to serving as a resident assistant, she has been a University 100 peer instructor, a student orientation assistant and a member of a plethora of student organizations.

“I have met many special people from all over the world through becoming involved around campus and have learned a lot about myself and others,” she said.

Following graduation, Taylor will be certified to teach art in a K-12 setting. She hopes to one day return to college to earn a master’s degree.
