Spring Fashion Show Sizzles at Radford University

RU Spring Fashion Show

A weekend of fashion events will put students’ creativity in the spotlight.

High fashion steps out on the Radford University campus Saturday, March 24, with the 2012 Spring Fashion Show, the annual capstone event of the Department of Interior Design & Fashion (ID&F).

Merchandising students produce and manage all aspects of the annual fashion show, and fashion design students exhibit their own creations, modeled on the runway by RU students. The garments are judged by a panel of fashion industry professionals.

"It is amazing to see how far they’ve come in their accomplishments," said Kathy Mitchell, an associate professor of fashion at Radford for 23 years. Throughout her tenure, Mitchell said, she has been impressed by the strong work ethic and tireless dedication demonstrated by the students, and she applauded the evolution of their creative talents and abilities.

The fashion show will be on the Radford campus at Bondurant Auditorium in Preston Hall. Tickets for the 5 p.m. show are $10 in advance and $15 at the door. A reception in the Preston Hall lobby will follow. Tickets may be purchased on campus in McGuffey Hall 211 or by calling (540) 831-5386.

The spring fashion show is also the culminating activity of the ID&F’s annual two-week senior showcase, held through March 24. The showcase gives students an opportunity to display their original work for the public while demonstrating their proficiency and readiness to enter highly competitive fields.

Another highlight of the annual ID&F celebration is the senior exhibition, on display through March 24 at the Radford University Art Museum at the Covington Center for Visual and Performing Arts. The exhibition features senior-level work in both fashion design and interior design. Student work exhibited in previous senior showcases has consistently won regional and national awards.

For these events, senior fashion design students are given seven yards of fabric and 48 hours to design a conceptual garment that will be displayed during the senior exhibition. Senior interior design students exhibit portfolio materials, including designs and impressions for the home and office. A special reception for the senior exhibit will be at 2 p.m. March 24 in the Covington Center foyer.

Radford's Department of Interior Design & Fashion was named a "Top 10 Design Program in the U.S." for 2011 by DesignIntelligence magazine.
