Two Radford University accounting students were awarded merit scholarships by the Roanoke Chapter of the Virginia Society of CPAs (VSCPA) at its annual Student Night in Roanoke.

Jorge Gonzales, a senior accounting major from Salem, received a $1,500 scholarship. Diego Velez, a senior accounting major from Collinsville, was awarded a $500 scholarship. The two were selected by the regional professional organization from among accounting students representing RU, James Madison University, Virginia Tech, Ferrum College and Roanoke College.

The event featured a panel discussion by accounting professionals led by VSCPA Chapter President Amanda Johnson, giving students an opportunity to network with those in the industry.

"I am very proud of Diego and Jorge, and we are grateful for the opportunity provided to our accounting students by the Roanoke Chapter of the VSCPA and local accounting firms," said Helen Roybark, associate professor of accounting in RU's College of Business and Economics.

The awarding of the top prize to Gonzalez marked the second time in two years that the $1,500 scholarship has gone to an RU student. Hannah Pope took home the award in 2011. Roybark said this year is the first time RU accounting students have earned two of the group's annual academic excellence awards.
