Ring in the Holidays with the Arts at RU

Share a gift of entertainment this holiday season by treating family, friends and yourself to a live performance at Radford University.

The College of Visual and Performing Arts announces the following events schedule for November and December. All events are free and open to the public unless otherwise noted.

Tri-State Chamber Wind Weekend, Thursday, Nov. 29-Saturday, Dec. 1, Performance Hall in the Covington Center for Visual and Performing Arts. The Department of Music at Radford University will host the 6th Annual Tri-State Chamber Winds Festival. Under the direction of RU Director of Bands Wayne Gallops, the event will feature RU Applied Wind Faculty and students, along with select high school students from Virginia, North Carolina and West Virginia. The RU Faculty Chamber Winds and the University Wind Ensemble will open the festival in concert at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Dec. 1, in the Performance Hall in the Covington Center on campus. The RU Concert Jazz Ensemble will perform on Friday, Nov. 30, at 8 p.m. High School student participants will be featured in concert on Saturday, Dec. 1, at 1 p.m. All concerts are in the Performance Hall in the Covington Center. GASA Show, Thursday, Nov. 29-Friday, Dec. 14, all day, Gallery 205. RU graduate art students mount their own installations of art in various media. Admission is free. Gallery 205 is in Porterfield Hall and open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m.

Madrigal Dinner, Friday, Nov. 30, and Saturday, Dec. 1, 6 to 8 p.m., Muse Banquet Hall. The Department of Music presents the annual Madrigal Dinner, one of the most highly anticipated events of the visual and performing arts season. The evening features music by the RU Madrigal Singers and other entertainment. Tickets may be purchased online (www.radford.edu/arts-tickets) or at the Hurlburt Student Center information desk (540) 831-5420, which will be closed the week of Thanksgiving. Due to the popularity of the dinner, early ticket purchase is encouraged. Admission is $30 for the general public and $25 with RU I.D. A two-ticket limit applies to those purchasing with an I.D.

B.F.A. Studio Art and Graphic Design: Graduation Exhibition Opening Reception, Friday, Nov. 30, 5 p.m., Radford University Art Museum at the Covington Center. Graduating students in the Bachelor of Fine Arts Program exhibit their best work. Admission is free. The exhibition will run through Dec. 15. The RU Art Museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. For more information, call (540) 831-5754.

The Velveteen Rabbit, Saturday, Dec. 1, 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Pridemore Playhouse. James Still’s retelling of the much-loved story by Margery Williams shows a young man recalling his relationship with his favorite childhood toy, the velveteen rabbit. Through this memory he experiences the poignancy of loss and learns the surprising wonders of love. Tickets are $6 for general admission, $5 for RU faculty and staff, $3 for children and free to students with RU I.D. Tickets go on sale the week before the event at the Porterfield box office or by calling (540) 831-5289. The box office is open Monday through Friday, noon to 6 p.m., and one hour before each performance.

The Nutcracker, 8 p.m. on Dec. 7, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Dec. 8, and 2 p.m. on Dec. 9, Bondurant Auditorium, Preston Hall. The Radford University Ballet Theatre presents The Nutcracker, a family holiday favorite. This year, Inessa Plekhanova, ballet professor and artistic director of RU Ballet Theatre, will present her Nutcracker for the University and community. RU dance faculty member Aleksey Plekhanov will assist with staging of the production. This magical work, performed to the enchanting Tchaikovsky score, will feature internationally recognized dancers in the leading roles. Tickets are $10 for the general public, $5 for children and RU dependents, and free with an RU I.D. Tickets go on sale two weeks before the event at the Hurlburt Student Center information desk. Informance, Tuesday, Dec. 11, 7:30 p.m., Albig Studio Theatre, Peters Hall B112. This event is an informal performance of works created by students enrolled in the Choreographic Studies I course. It gives young choreographers an opportunity to create original movement vignettes and then present the compositions in a public setting. They are also responsible for lighting and costuming their works. The student choreographers and performers look forward to the audience feedback given during the "talk back" session at the close of the concert. Admission is free.
