Waldron College announces events focused on diversity and scholarship

With the beginning of a new academic year, the Waldron College of Health and Human Services (WCHHS) is working to increase scholarship opportunities and encourage full participation in the college's programs and activities.

To focus on diversity opportunities and full participation, WCHHS will host the first of its six-session Equity Brown Bag Series on Thursday, Sept. 12 at Noon in Heth 044.

Presenting an overview of diversity at RU at this initial session will be Crasha Perkins, director of the Center for Diversity and Inclusion; Ms. Brooke Chang, director of Diversity and Equity and James Pennix, dean of Admissions and Enrollment Management. The events are free and open to the public who are encouraged to bring their own lunch and beverage.

The Equity Brown Bag Series is part of the WCHHS' ongoing effort to promote full participation in its programs said Associate Dean Corey Cassidy. Sponsored by the Waldron College's Equity Committee, subsequent topics of the monthly sessions will include hidden disabilities among students, faculty and staff; communication gaps and diversity in the WCHHS curriculum.

Waldron College is also planning two events to highlight and encourage scholarship opportunities among its students and faculty. Let’s get W.I.R.E.D. (Waldron Interprofessional Researchers Engaging in Dialogue), a gathering of faculty to interact socially and discuss research and scholarship opportunities, is set for Monday, Oct. 7 from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in Waldron Hall.

To promote scholarship and research success, WCHHS will host the 1st Annual 2014 Waldron College Interprofessional Symposium and Expo on April 18, 2014 in the Hurlburt Student Center. The event will showcase the exceptional research and scholarly work of the WCHHS faculty and students as well as that from across the university, said Cassidy. The symposium will feature a keynote speaker focused on interprofessional research and scholarship, faculty and student poster sessions, technical sessions by both faculty and students showcasing peer-reviewed presentations and publications and roundtable discussions among interdisciplinary groups of faculty and students.
