Some of the state’s finest high school students will take center stage at Radford University again as the Virginia Summer Residential Governor's Schools in the Humanities and the Visual and Performing Arts return to campus.

The month-long program began on June 27 and offers challenges and rewards of college-level work and life away from home for the young women and men in attendance. The program continues through July 22.

“After only a week of the 2016 program, we could tell that we had one of the most creative, intelligent and engaged Governor’s School classes ever to come to Radford University,” said Director Paul Thomas. “They are meeting and exceeding our expectations in every way.”

Since 2010, Radford University has hosted the program, which gives junior and senior high school students the opportunity to use their creativity in music, visual and performing arts and the humanities. Students choose the classes that most pique their interest from a varied curriculum taught by RU faculty members and guest instructors.

Visual and Performing arts students will spend the month honing their craft. Actors, dancers, musicians, artists and designers will have opportunities to take intensive workshops in their fields and show their work as the semester progresses.

Humanities students will have plenty of chances to stretch their imaginations and critical thinking skills. Classes range from “The Art and Science of Comedy,” a course that examines how cultures create meaning through laughter, to “Photographs That Changed The World,” a survey of images that catalogued and shaped history.

More information about course offerings can be found on the Radford University Governor’s School website.
