Detailed Description of Content of Course
This course will address the following concepts:
1. Technology, telecommunications, and information systems that enrich curriculum, instruction and the diverse needs of students.
2. Digital tools supporting instruction, management, and school operations.
3. Emerging Technologies Digital networking through various platforms Evaluation of current educational technology practices with a focus on access, equity, benefits, and challenges.
4. Personal learning opportunities that reflect a knowledge of the impact of current and emerging technologies on student learning, school improvement, and school operations.
5. Practical experience in the field that may include facilitating professional learning opportunities, interviewing current educational leaders, and sharing resources (both within and outside of the current work environment).
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Investigation, analysis, and practical applications characterize the conduct of this course as students are given opportunities to explore technological applications, current educational technology research, and professional learning networks for the purpose of effectively enriching teaching and learning in K-12 schools. Twenty hours of structured field experiences with an on-site mentor / principal / and/or supervisor will also be required for completion of the course and will be reported in a variety of assignments. Guest speakers, course readings, and interviews with various stakeholders will be employed. A variety of written and/or oral assignments (research reviews, reflective writings, narrative responses, journals, formal papers, book talks, interviews) will be used to help students assimilate information. Group and individual tasks will be used to process and reinforce information/skills and for class sharing. Lectures and course presentations are utilized to supplement and reinforce course readings and discussions.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
The goals, objectives, and assignments in this class address standards specified in Regulations Governing the Review and Approval of Education Programs in Virginia, Administration and Supervision PreK-12 and the National Educational Leadership Preparation standards.
The student will:
1. Demonstrate the capacity to collaboratively evaluate, develop, and communicate a school mission and vision designed to reflect a core set of values and priorities that include data use, technology, equity, diversity, digital citizenship, and community.
2. Demonstrate the capacity to reflect on, communicate about, cultivate, and model professional dispositions and norms (i.e., fairness, integrity, transparency, trust, digital citizenship, collaboration, perseverance, reflection, lifelong learning) that support the educational success and well-being of each student and adult.
3. Demonstrate the capacity to evaluate, cultivate and advocate for equitable access to educational resources, technologies, and opportunities that support the educational success and well-being of each student.
4. Demonstrate the capacity to evaluate, develop, and implement high-quality, technology-rich curricula programs and other supports for academic and non-academic student programs.
5. Demonstrate the capacity to collaboratively evaluate, develop, and implement the school’s curriculum, instruction, technology, data systems, and assessment practices in a coherent, equitable, and systematic manner.
6. Demonstrate the capacity to evaluate, develop, and implement management, communication, technology, school-level governance, and operation systems that support each student’s learning needs and promote the mission and vision of the school.
Assessment Measures
Instructors of the course may assess students with the following assignments including but not limited to:
- Development of a vision statement that addresses technology integration during your first year as an administrator. Students will then list at least three specific goals supporting that vision.
- Completion of individual and group assignment and projects which may incorporate (1) the use of a variety of digital tools, (2) current educational technology research, (3) curation of resources, (4) interviews in the field, and (5) personal learning experiences acquired throughout the course
Technological proficiency must be demonstrated through project development, use of digital tools, course presentations, and written/oral/electronic correspondence.strated in written assignments, electronic mail communications, and correspondence.
