I. Course Title: Allied Health Sciences Practicum II

II. Course Number: ESHE 250

III. Credit Hours: 1 credit

IV. Prerequisites: ESHE 225, BIOL 310, and minimum 3.0 GPA.

V. Course Description: This clinical experience is designed to provide students with exposure to an allied healthcare setting distinct from ESHE 225. This practicum experience assists a student in applying skills from his or her coursework in a professional setting. This course requires the completion of 30 hours of clinical experience.

Note(s): Applied Learning designated course.  This course will be graded pass/fail.

VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:

This course follows ESHE 225 (Allied Health Sciences Practicum I). This practicum will provide students with an appreciation for the duties and responsibilities of an allied health professional but in a separate and unique setting from that of ESHE 225. Professional schools require varied observation experiences for admission and this course will ensure students are exposed to alternative practice settings. Students will be required to document observation experiences and reflect on their relevance to professional association standards. Students are also required to reflect on how this experience affects their professional development and goals, and continues to work towards meeting the required hours for graduate school applications.

VI. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course:

Students will participate in allied health activities (e.g., occupational therapy, physical therapy) for 30 hours during the semester or winter. A therapist or related practitioner will directly supervise these experiences. Students will communicate with classmates and the course instructor weekly to discuss various issues related to allied health care professional duties and responsibilities.

VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

  1. Explain the duties and responsibilities of an allied healthcare professional.
  2. Identify the various standards of professional allied health associations and how they relate to practice.
  3. Explain how allied health professionals communicate in various settings, including written communication methods.
  4. Describe various therapeutic and rehabilitation modalities used in allied healthcare settings.

Assessment measures may include, but are not limited to:

  1. Critical self-reflections
  2. Guided observation logs
  3. Weekly discussion posts
