MATH 111. Math and Human Development I
Three lecture hours (3).
Prerequisites: None

Covers a variety of topics in number systems, operations, data analysis, and probability. The content of this course adheres to the NCTM Standards and the Virginia Standards of Learning where they can appropriately be applied. Will not satisfy requirements for a major in mathematics. Students who have previously taken Math 103 may not receive credit for Math 111. General Education Credit – Mathematical Sciences.


 Detailed Description of Course
Topics: The topics included in Math 111 are:
1. Number and Operations
•    Whole number arithmetic
•    Integer arithmetic
•    Rational number arithmetic
•    Rational number representations/Meaning
•    Decimal system and bases
•    Proportionality
•    Percents
•    Historical/cultural development: tallying, grouping, place notation
•    Factors, primes, divisibility
•    Ratio and proportion
•    GCD, LCM
In addition, the following elements will be examined and applied in both Math 111 and Math 112:
1. Measurement
•    Numerical magnitudes and analysis, number lines
•    Relative position, ordinality
•    Averdupois and metric systems
2. Problem Solving
•    Principles of problem solving
•    Applications in numerical topics
3. Reasoning and Proof
•    Conjecture vs. proof
•    Mathematical reasoning
4. Communications, Connections, Representations
•    Mathematical communication with peers
•    Evaluating mathematical thinking
•    Using the language of mathematics
•    Making connections among math topics
•    Modeling
5. Technology
•    Effective use of calculators
•    Write equations in Word


Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
This course will be conducted as an exemplar of the teaching methods we wish the students to acquire. In addition to lecture/recitation this course will include cooperative/group learning and projects, Socratic (instructor-student) and group (student-student) dialogue, written responses to material, and diverse assessment instruments, including self-assessment. Course materials will include project material and assessment developed by math department faculty, in coordination with the School of Education.


 Student Goals and Objectives of the Course
This course and its successor implement the Virginia standards and the NCTM standards for mathematics education. The primary goal is to prepare students for effective classroom teaching in the primary grades. Students should acquire a deep and multi-faceted understanding of the mathematical topics presented, and be able to communicate the mathematical ideas involved clearly. Students will examine and implement problem solving techniques appropriate to the primary grades, and recognize how to apply data analysis and probability both to student assessment and to self-assessment as a professional educator.

Assessment Measures
Students will be assessed on their content knowledge of the mathematical topics presented using various forms of assessment, which may include homework, projects, quizzes, and tests, among other forms of assessment. In addition, students may be assessed on their in-class engagement (participation) and on their cooperative work with other students.
