DIRECTED STUDY
Catalog Entry
PHSC 698. Directed Study
Credit Hours (1-4). Hours and credit to be arranged in consultation with the faculty member with whom the student will work on the directed study.
Prerequisites: Eligibility for admission to candidacy and approval of the dean of the Graduate College. For important additional information, see "Directed Study" in the current university catalog.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
The topic and methodology of study vary with each individual student.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
The student will select, in consultation with the faculty member who will supervise the student, a topic for study. The student and professor will then prepare a written proposal specifying the topic to be studied, the pedagogy to be used, the specific objectives of the study, the credit hours to be awarded upon successful completion of the study, and the specific assessment measures that will be used to determine the level of success. This proposal must then be approved by the supervising professor, the student's adviser, the Chair of the Physical Science Department, the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Dean of the Graduate College. If any of these individuals object to the proposal as submitted, it may be revised to accommodate the objection(s) and resubmitted. Once approval has been obtained, the student is permitted to register for the appropriate number of credit hours and proceeds with the directed study.
Goals and Objectives of Course
Specific goals for each student's independent study must be stated in the written proposal submitted for approval and should reflect student outcomes.
Assessment Measures
The supervising professor and the student agree in advance on what assessment measures will be used to determine the level of success in the course. Since these measures can and do vary widely, no meaningful specifics can be provided.
Other Course Information
This course is the graduate level version of PHSC 498, Independent Study. Because PHSC 698 carries graduate credit, it demands a correspondingly higher level of achievement than PHSC 498.
