Recent Community Engagement Highlights

  • Coordination of the Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellows program in Spring 2012
  • Supported creation of the Scholar-Citizen Initiative, a university-wide effort to enhance learning through public engagement.
  • Developed prospectus for the Scholar-Citizen Quality Enhancement Plan (PDF) proposal in Fall 2011
  • Offered Radford University’s first Alternative Spring Break in spring 2011, to Lockhart, SC
  • Developed and introduced civic engagement course, Community, Service, and Leadership (COED 461), fall 2010. 
  • The Office of Community Engagement reorganized in 2009 placing a renewed emphasis on civic engagement and service learning. This change is timely and important given Radford University centennial, “100 years of service,” as well as the increasing expectations that higher education, and particularly state colleges and universities, maintain and strengthen their role as stewards of place, who can engage with their communities and regions to confront pressing issues, challenges, and opportunities. 
  • Published, Pride and Preservation – Mountain View Cemetery – A Partnership between the African-American Churches of Radford, Virginia, and Radford University with a grant from the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities
  • Selected for the President’s Honor Role for Community Service (PDF) by the Learn and Serve America Corporation.
