Erin Sullivan, LCSW, DCSW

Sullivan is a licensed clinical social worker who has been in practice for over 24 years (8 years at SCS). She obtained her bachelor’s degree from Mary Baldwin College and her master’s degree at Virginia Commonwealth University. Erin has enjoyed living and working in the NRV since 1987.

John Betzel, LPC, LMFT

John is a licensed professional counselor and a marriage and family therapist, who has practiced in a variety of settings for more than 33 years (10 years at SCS).  He obtained his master's degree from Georgia State University.  Originally from Atlanta, GA, John and his family have enjoyed living and working in the beautiful New River Valley since 1996.


David Hamilton, Ph.D., LCP
Clinical Psychologist

Hamilton is a licensed clinical psychologist who has been practicing in a variety of settings for over 30 years.  He obtained his doctorate from the University of Virginia, completed an internship in a university counseling center and has enjoyed living and working in the New River for 25 years.


Deborah Miller, LPC, LMFT

Miller is a licensed professional counselor and a  marriage and family therapist who has been in practice for over 25 years.  Deborah  moved to the NRV to completed her masters at Virginia Tech and joined the SCS staff in 2010 .


Eleanore Gubitosa, NCC, LPC


Eleanore is a licensed professional counselor who has primarily worked with youth and young adults.  She obtained her Master's degree from Marymount University.  Eleanore joined the SCS staff in 2013 and is enjoying living in southwestern Virginia.

Stirling Barfield M.S. CCC-SLP, MSW


Barfield recently relocated to Virginia from Florida where she received a Masters in Speech Language Pathology and a second Masters in Clinical Social Work form Florida State University. After practicing for 7 years as a licensed SLP and 2 years as a mental health clinician, she returned to the university setting to pursue a Doctorate in Counseling Psychology. Barfield recently traveled to South Africa, where she spent time doing research on resilience and psychosocial support. Barfield will be completing her Doctoral Internship rotation with the Radford University Counseling Center. She is looking forward to serving her home community of Radford University and is excited to be a part of such a wonderful team!


Anna Vandevender, M.S.


Anna recently completed her Master's in Applied Clinical Psychology from the University of South Carolina Aiken and is currently pursuing her Doctorate in Counseling Psychology. She is originally from West Virginia and is enjoying the opportunity to continue her education.

Arbogast 2-Best

Anjela Arbogast, MD

Dr. Arbogast received her masters’s degree in public health from Boston University and medical degree at Tashkent Medical Institute in Utbekistan.  She worked as a neurologist and family practitioner for sixteen years before completing her degree in child and adolescent psychiatry with the Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, VA.  Dr. Arbogast  joined the SCS team in 2013.


Sarah Gayle Ballagh
Health Educator

Ballagh graduated from Radford University in 2013 with a bachelor’s degree in Health Promotion/ Health Education and is pursuing a master’s in public health from Virginia Tech. In addition Sarah Gayle is a Staff Sergeant in the US Army Reserves having served over 8 years as a medic and health educator in various units.


Sandra Watson
Medical Office Assistant, II

Watson joined the SCS Office as the Clinical Office Associate in October 2003. She has lived in the New River Valley all of her life and enjoys working with the students and staff at Radford University.

Sherrie Smith

Sherrie Smith
Medical Office Assistant

Smith has lived in the New River Valley all of her life.  She has worked as a receptionist for counseling centers for the past 15 years and enjoys working at the Student Counseling Services staff.
