This is a partial listing of scholarships available for students entering, or continuing in, the Waldron College of Health and Human Services at Radford University.

Radford University Grant - Amount of award varies according to need, but will not exceed the cost of tuition and fees.  Student must be a legal resident of Virginia and demonstrate financial need.  Contact the Financial Aid Office at RU for more information.

Freshman Scholarship Program - This scholarship is given to new freshmen. To be considered, students must have at least a 3.5 high school GPA and 1180 SAT score.  All freshman applicants, who apply by December 15 of each year, are considered. Finalists for the awards are asked for additional information and possibly an on-campus interview. For more information, contact the RU Admissions Office. 

Americorps - This scholarship includes an allowance of $6,000 while in the program, and an educational award of $4,725 to pay for future college or past student loans. Applicant must be between 18 and 24 years old, and commit to 10 months of service. For more information, call 1-800-942-2677.

Army College Fund (& Montgomery GI Bill)  - This award is up to $30,000 for any approved VA college training.  Student must meet certain Army criteria. Contact your local Army Recruiting Station for more information.

Janet Hardy Boettcher Memorial Scholarship - Must have been accepted into upper division Nursing at Radford University. Must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA and be committed to working in rural health care.

Mary Kathryn Phipps Brewer Memorial Scholarship - Must be a Foods and Nutrition major.  Must maintain a 2.75 overall GPA and 3.0 major GPA. Must reapply each year.

Bruns-Whiddon Scholarship - Must maintain a minimum 2.5 GPA and demonstrate leadership qualities in clubs or organizations at RU. Must be a Communication Sciences and Disorders major.

Albert Carlot Memorial Scholarship - Must be a non-traditional undergraduate student majoring in Nursing. Must maintain a 3.5 GPA.

Fernande Marie Carlot Memorial Scholarship - Must be a non-traditional graduate student majoring in Nursing with an undergraduate GPA of 3.5. First preference given to those who plan to work in the geriatric field.

Eleanor M. Deneka Memorial Nursing Scholarship - Must be a rising junior with a declared major in Nursing and a minimum 3.0 GPA. Priority consideration given to a student from the Roanoke Nursing Program. Must demonstrate leadership qualities in extracurricular, academic or community activities. Consideration given to financial need, including those who are self-sufficient. FAFSA required. Must reapply to be considered.

George Everett and Matsue Yamazaki Dewese Scottish Rite Graduate Fellowship - Must be a second year graduate student in Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Down Syndrome Association of the Roanoke Valley Scholarship - Must maintain a 3.0 GPA and must major in Social Work, Communication Sciences and Disorders, or Recreation, Parks and Tourism.

The Dr. Herta Freitag Scholarship in Geriatric Nursing - Student must be deemed gifted and dedicated to the geriatric nursing profession.

The Kathy Green Memorial Scholarship - Must be a junior or senior with a major in the Waldron College of Health and Human Services.

Grace Hall Harvey Memorial Scholarship - Must maintain a 3.0 GPA, have upper class status and major in Nursing. Contact the Financial Aid Office at RU to apply.

Indian Health Service Program - This award pays tuition, fees and a monthly stipend in return for service obligation. Must be a U.S. citizen, Native American and Alaskan residents only, and accepted into a full-time BSN or MSN program, with at least a 2.0 GPA.  Apply to:  Indian Health Service Scholarship Programs, Twin Metro Plaza Suite 100, 12300 Twinbrook Parkway, Rockville, MD 20852.

Dr. William Keck Memorial Endowed Nursing Scholarship  and Dr. James P. King Memorial Endowed Nursing Scholarship - Awards are based upon academic merit, with priority give to employees of St. Albans Hospital or their dependents who have been accepted into the undergraduate or graduate Nursing program.

Dr. James P. King Memorial Nursing Scholarship - First priority given to employees of Carilion St. Albans Hospital and their dependents who have accepted into the RU undergraduate or graduate Nursing program. Awards are based on academic merit.

Clyde F. Kirk Nursing Scholarship - Must be a junior or senior in the Nursing program.   Priority is given to residents of Montgomery County, Virginia.

Mary Marshall Nursing Scholarships -These awards will not exceed $2000 annually ($4000 for MSN students).  Must be a Virginia resident (for at least one year), be enrolled in the School of Nursing, have at least a 3.0 GPA and demonstrate financial need.  After graduation, student must be willing to practice in Virginia (or pay the award back with interest).  For more information, call the Office of Public Health Nursing at 1-804-371-4090 or pick up an application at the School of Nursing in 307 Waldron Hall.

The Candice Crizer McDearmon Memorial Scholarship - Must be a graduate student in Speech Language Pathology.  Priority is given to students with financial need.

The Sandi McPherson Memorial Endowed Scholarships - Must  major in Recreation, Parks and Tourism. Must be a full time student and maintain a 3.0 GPA for renewability.

Medical Facilities of America Scholarships in Geriatric Studies - For Medical Facilities of America employees or their dependents. Must major in Nursing, Social Work, COSD, Dietetics or Therapeutic Recreation. Contact RU Admissions for more information.

Naval ROTC Unit (Va Tech-RU) - Scholarship covers tuition, fees, books, uniforms, nursing supplies, and $100/month tax-free allowance. Must serve four years of active service after graduation.  Must meet NROTC physical requirements.  For more information, contact the Naval ROTC Unit, Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, VA 24061-0241 or call (540) 231-7883.

Navy College Fund - This award is up to $30,000 toward college expenses, after two years of continuous active duty. Student must participate in the Montgomery GI Bill, be between 17 and 23 years old, enlist in the Navy for eight years, and meet other Navy requirements. Contact your local Navy Recruiting Station for more information.

Nursing Scholarship - Must be accepted into upper division Nursing.  Must have completed at least 60 credits, 30 at RU, with a minimum 3.5 GPA.  

Nursing Student Loans - Low interest loans for needy students in the Nursing program.  May borrow up to $2,500 per academic year, or up to $4,000 for upper division Nursing students.  Contact the Financial Aid Office at RU for more information.

Foundation of National Student Nurses' Association Scholarship Program - Awards range from $1,000 to $2,500.  Student must be enrolled in Nursing (BSN or MSN program) or  Pre-Nursing.  Request applications from: The Foundation of the National Student Nurses' Association, Inc., 555 West 57th St., Suite 1327, New York, NY 10019 (include a self-addressed, stamped, business-size envelope).

PI GAMMA MU Honor Society Scholarship - Applicant must be a rising junior  with a minimum 3.0 GPA. Have a declared major in Social Work. Must not be, nor ever have been , on 20 weeks or more of disciplinary probation or suspension from any academic institution of higher education.

ROTC Scholarships - Army ROTC offers two,  three and four year scholarships.  Applications for the two and three year scholarships are available through the Professor of Military Science at RU for freshmen and sophomores. You may check out Radford University ROTC online or call 1-800-USA-ROTC for information about four year scholarships.

Scottish Rite Fellowships in Language Disorders are available to Virginia residents enrolled in the COSD graduate program. Applications are available in the COSD Department in Waldron Hall.

Frances G. Seither Scholarship - Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and have upper-class standing in the Nursing major.

C. Darrell Shell Scholarship - Must maintain a 2.5 GPA and have upper-class standing in the Recreation, Parks and Tourism major.

A. Victor Thomas Recreation and Leisure Services Scholarships - Must maintain a 3.0 GPA and major in Recreation, Parks and Tourism.  Must demonstrate student leadership on campus.

Veterans Administration Health Professional Scholarship - This award pays full tuition, fees and a monthly stipend in return for a 2 year service at a VA medical center.  Must be a full-time student (BSN or MSN) in the final 1-2 years of a Nursing program, a U.S. citizen, with a GPA of at least 3.0.  Apply to:  Health Professional Scholarship Program, Dept. of Veterans Affairs Central, 810 Vermont Ave. NW, Washington, DC 24020.

Virginia Health Occupations Education Memorial Scholarship for a health care worker who has completed a vocational health occupations educational program but wants to further that education.  Contact the Mildred A. Mason Memorial Scholarship Foundation at PO Box 9175, Hampton, VA 23661 for more info.

Sharon Dow Wimmer Scholarship - Must be an upper-division COSD major with a minimum 2.75 GPA.

Richard Kent Hough Scholarships, Lettie Pate Whitehead Foundation Scholarships, and Elbert H. and Evelyn J. Waldron Presidential Scholarships are also available to Waldron College majors.  The Presidential Scholarships provide funding for partial and full scholarships up to $40,000 over four years.

Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program This federal program can re-pay up to 85% of a participant’s student loans.  Participants must work full-time for two to three years in an underserved area of the U.S. (e.g., rural areas).  For more information, contact the Nursing Education Loan Repayment Program at (800) 435-6464.
