Nutrition and Dietetics Major
The Didactic Program in Nutrition and Dietetics (DPND) is designed to prepare students for careers as Registered Dietitians/Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RD/RDN) working in wellness, disease prevention and nutrition therapy settings. Alternative career paths include healthcare foodservice management, public health and the medical food industry. Through a program committed to continual review, evaluation and improvement, the DPND provides the learning opportunities to achieve the core knowledge requirements defined by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND).
Our program offers a close-knit environment with registered dietitians teaching upper-division classes. The ratio of faculty to students in the typical upper-division classes makes it possible for faculty to get to know students and be available for assistance and advising outside of class time. Students get to know each other by taking many classes together and often form strong bonds which persist after graduation.
Radford University graduates are accepted in dietetic internships and graduate school programs all over the United States. Alumni are working in a wide variety of dietetics specialties from medical nutrition therapy to retail marketing to health and wellness.

Admission and Progression Requirements for Nutrition and Dietetics
- Admission Criteria for Nutrition and Dietetics upper division coursework:
- Official transcripts reflecting a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better from all post-secondary schools attended including RU.
- Completion of the following prerequisites with a grade of C or better:
- NUTR 214 - Introduction to Nutrition
- CHEM 101 - General Chemistry
- BIOL 105 - Biology for Health Sciences
- BIOL 310 and BIOL 311 - Anatomy and Physiology
- BIOL 334 - Microbiology
- PSYC 121 - Introductory Psychology
- MATH 137 - College Algebra
- STAT 200 - Introduction to Statistics
- Complete the online application and submit transcripts to the Advising Center by Jan. 31 for fall enrollment for current students and before fall registration for new students.
- Progression Criteria: Students are required to maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher to complete and graduate in this major.
Nutrition and Dietetics (NUTR) majors are required to complete core curriculum requirements specified by the department, major requirements, related requirements, specific degree requirements and elective courses for a total of 120 credit hours for the bachelor of science degree.
Students take the prerequisite courses during the first two years, followed by the upper division (300 and 400 level) major courses in lock-step sequence. Cohorts for upper division begin in the fall. Application to upper division is made in January prior to the fall semester when enrollment is expected. All requirements for admission must be satisfied before entering upper division.
Admission to ACEND accredited post-baccalaureate Internship Program in Nutrition and Dietetics is competitive. Documentation of or more 100 hours of volunteer or work experience in an appropriate nutrition related setting enhances chance of placement. Students should work with their faculty advisor for guidance on appropriate settings.
Students interested in transferring to Radford University in Nutrition and Dietetics from VCCS are strongly encouraged to complete an Associate of Arts, Associate of Science or Associate of Arts and Science including the following courses:
• NUTR 214 (DIT 121 and 122 (both) or HLTH138 or 230 HLTH 138 or 230)
• CHEM 101 (CHM 101 or 111)
• BIOL 105 (BIO 101)
• BIOL 310 & 311 (BIO 141/142 or 231/232 or NAS 171/172)
• BIOL 334 (BIO 150 or 205 or NAS 180 or 185)
• MATH 137 (MTH 158 or higher level math)
• STAT 200 (MTH 146, 157, 240, 241 or 242)
• PSYC 121 (PSY 200 or 201)
Upon completion of the VCCS transferrable AA, AS or AAS degree including the prerequisite courses and 3.0 cumulative GPA (from all post-secondary schools attended), students may apply to enroll in a fall cohort. Students are encouraged to join the Student Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (SAND) @RU. This student organization promotes the profession of dietetics through leadership opportunities, community services, and professional development.
