Joan Laguzza

Washington, D.C.
Major: Social Work in the Waldron College of Health and Human Services
Campus involvement: Student representative on the Institutional Review Board (IRB) for Radford University

After a fulfilling career as a legal secretary and executive assistant in multinational corporations, Joan Laguzza decided it was time for a new direction. Laguzza's brother, who lives in Roanoke, Va., suggested she speak with a friend of his who received her degree in social work from Radford University. The conversation convinced Laguzza to make a big change in her life.

“I realized that my talents and capabilities would be put to much better use in helping people solve problems and live more productive lives,” she said.

As a non-traditional student, Laguzza admits that returning to school has been a challenge.

“I have had to learn the habits of a good student, but I have also learned how much my life experiences added value to my education” she said. “What I have enjoyed most about my time at Radford University has been making connections with fellow students and being able to learn from them, as well as share my own experience.”

Laguzza plans to continue her education at Radford University by earning a master’s degree in social work and gaining licensure as a clinical social worker. Her ultimate goal is to work in the areas of immigration, correctional/justice systems and forensic social work.
