Tennessee native Jessica Wheeler knew she wanted to major in dance and mathematics; however, no public universities in her state offered a dance major. As she researched colleges, she learned about a program called Academic Common Market. The program allows students from states that don’t offer specific majors to attend out-of-state schools while paying in-state tuition.

As she researched her options in nearby states, Wheeler found that many universities don’t allow students to choose two majors in different colleges. Then she found Radford University.

“I decided on Radford University because of the flexibility and encouragement for me to double major in math and dance,” Wheeler said. “I am passionate about both and I am thankful to be at a school that offers me the opportunity to explore both.”

Although an unusual combination for a double major, Wheeler says that math was her favorite subject throughout high school, and she knew she wanted to continue studying it in college. Dance was also a major part of her life and she  wanted to incorporate that into her studies as well.

“There were appealing aspects to both my chosen programs. I was attracted to the math program because of the small class sizes and knowing that the classes are all taught by professors and not teaching assistants, but I was also drawn to the dance program because the faculty always strive to create an environment that encourages growth and offers students a broad range of study with various dance styles and classes,” she said.

While Radford has offered her the choice to pursue her passions, after graduation, Wheeler plans to continue her education by attending graduate school and continuing her exploration of math.
