Sophomore from Vinton, Virginia
Major: Sports Medicine in the College of Education and Human Development

Alex Fisher is passionate about living actively through sports and exercise. As he was researching universities, he knew he wanted to study sports medicine as an undergraduate student and pursue graduate studies in physical therapy.

Radford University was an obvious choice – offering both an undergraduate major in sports medicine and a doctoral program in physical therapy. The close-knit campus community and the ample opportunities for outdoor recreation were just icing on the cake.

Growing up, Fisher had considered the idea of becoming a nurse, like his mother, or a doctor. The summer before his junior year of high school, he began to volunteer with physical therapists that worked for Medical Facilities of America. Fisher found the opportunity rewarding and was amazed with the progress therapy recipients made.

“People are so happy to gain their independence back and are very grateful for the help of a physical therapist,” he said. “I would be proud to help people improve their physical state for my professional career.”

Not only did Medical Facilities of America provide Fisher with his first experiences seeing the field of physical therapy in action, the organization also gave Fisher a scholarship and a position as a nursing assistant to gain hands-on experience in the healthcare field as he studies.

Once Fisher completes his degree in sports medicine, his goal is to enroll in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Radford University. His dream is to help elderly patients who are recovering from injuries and illness return to a functional, independent lifestyle.
