The Family Nurse Practitioner program prepares registered nurses with graduate-level academic knowledge and clinical skills to practice in the roles of clinicians, educators, and leaders. Family nurse practitioners diagnose and treat acute and chronic conditions, partnering with patients to maintain health and wellness, with a focus on preventative care.

Opportunities for Family Nursing Practitioner students at Radford
Given the tremendous need for well-qualified nurses throughout the U.S., the federal government-along with many other employers-offer loan-forgiveness programs to help licensed nurses who practice in high-need areas repay their student loans:
- The NURSE Corps Loan Repayment Program is a unique program geared toward nurses who work in underserved communities at critical shortage facilities. Registered nurses who work at least 32 hours/week at a qualified facility can have 60% of their student loans paid in 2 years of employment.
- The Perkins Loan, The Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, and other programs offered by individual states provide tremendous loan-forgiveness opportunities to support practicing nurses.

The Family Nurse Practitioner program at Radford University Carilion is designed specifically for working nurses who need the flexibility to complete the program while maintaining their current employment. The graduates are eligible for national certification exams through 1 of 2 certifying bodies-the American Nurses Credentialing Center (AACN) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).
