AHPT 866: Neuromuscular Development and Control II
Prerequisite: AHPT 844 or permission of the Department
Credit Hours: (4)
Neuromuscular Development and Control II is the second in a sequence of patient management
of adult neurological disorders. The course builds on previous course content from
Neuromuscular Development and Control I, Patient Management I & II and the clinical
Medicine sequence, by including additional neurological conditions. Clinical implications
and applications of treatment approaches will be discussed based on current best practices
utilizing the International Classifications of Functioning (ICF) model. The format
for this course will be lecture/lab style, including patient demonstration and case
studies. This course prepares students to participate in their second and third clinical
experiences.

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Methods of instruction: Lecture, laboratory experiences, group discussions, case analysis and community experiences.
Class Attendance and Professionalism: Class attendance is a privilege and an expectation, as long as you remain in good standing. All students will attend all scheduled classes and laboratories. Professional behavior, including class attendance, appropriate dress, no cell phones, no food in class and through preparation for each class session, is an expression of your commitment to this program, to yourself, and to becoming the best therapist you can be. If you anticipate being unable to attend class or scheduled acitvity, for any reason, you need to notify the course manager. A full grade-reduction may result from unexcused absences, consistent tardiness, or unexcused electronic device usage.
Goals and Objectives of this Course
Will require students to:
1) Perform an evaluation and create an appropriate evidence-based plan of care for management of vestibular disorders (CC-5.18; CC-5.30tv; 7A, 7C, 7D11, 7D19d,i,n 7D27g,i);
2) Perform an evaluation and create an appropriate plan of care for management of geriatric population using clinical reasoning based on current evidence (7C, 7D11, 7D17, 7D19a,b,d,i,r,n, 7D27a,d,g,h,i);
3) Perform an evaluation and create an appropriate plan of care for Parkinson's, MS and ALS patients using clinical reasoning based on current evidence (7A, 7C, 7D10, 7D11, 7D19d,i,n,q, 7D27g);
4) Identify and interpret findings from EMG/NCV studies to make clinical decisions about physical therapy management (7D11);
5) Perform an evaluation and create an appropriate evidence-based plan of care for the management of SCI patients using clinical reasoning based on current evidence (CC-5.30i; 7A, 7C, 7D10, 7D11, 7D19c,d,i,f,m,n,r,t,u, 7D27b,c,g,i);
6) Based on current evidence, recommend lower and upper extremity assistive technology, their appropriate use, and appropriate progression following spinal cord injury (CC-5.30o; 7D27b);
7) Evaluate wheelchair needs for individuals with spinal cord injury and make appropriate recommendations to justify medical necessity (CC-5.25; 7D27b);
8) Identify and recommend community resources for patients with neurological disorders based on their impairments, activity limitations and participation restrictions (CC-5.28; 7D12, 7D21);
9) Recognize architectural and environmental considerations for a given patient to achieve their highest functional level of independence at home/community (CC-5.28; CC-5.39; 7D1, 7D23);
10) Develop educational content for health promotion and wellness of individuals with neurological disorders in the community (CC-5.30tv; 7D34);
11) Integrate physical therapy goals with the health beliefs, patient values, and cultural influences of the patient, family, and rehabilitation team (CC-5.36; 7D5, 7D8, 7D10, 7D24);
12) Develop comprehensive physical therapy program for a patient with a neurological disorder and other co-morbidities that include modifying the plan as indicated by patient's response and progress (CC-5.38; 7D20, 7D22, 7D30);
13) Demonstrate ability to recognize and respond appropriately to "red flags" in patients with neurological disorders and make appropriate referrals when indicated (CC-5.44; 7D33;
