Prerequisites: ARTG 280 with “C” or better, BFA in Graphic Design majors

This required portfolio review acts as an entry portal to the upper level (300+) graphic design classes in the BFA in Graphic Design program.  It is a pass/fail course and may be repeated.

2. Detailed Description of Course

This non-credit course is a portfolio review. The student will be required to present graphic design and studio work completed during their freshman/sophomore & 1st semester transfers years in a formal and professional manner.  A jury of faculty and/or outside graphic design experts will critique and grade the student’s level of expertise and progress.  A passing score will allow the student to proceed into the junior level of classes within the program.

3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

The ARTG 289 Program Entry Review consists of a student presentation of completed works of art and graphic design.  These works are expected to be presented in a professional manner; printed, mounted, or projected.  An oral explanation of design approaches and techniques utilized will also be required.  A critique of the work by a panel of faculty and/or graphic design experts will grade the work and give the student important feedback on their progress and outlook.

4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

Having successfully completed this course, the student will have presented to themselves and the faculty that they have the knowledge, skills, and motivation necessary to enter and continue into the next level (300) of instruction in the BFA in Graphic Design program.

5. Assessment Measures

Work will be assessed by the level of design competence, technical expertise, and overall ability shown in the work using standard graphic design and artistic criteria.  It will be a pass/fail grade.
