ARTG 483: Interactive Motion Graphics
Prerequisites: ARTG 384 with a grade of "C" or better
Credit Hours: (3) One hour lecture; three and a half hours lab.
Explore the use of graphics and sound to create time-based animations using the Adobe Flash software platform. Course will introduce the techniques of vector-based motion graphics, with an emphasis on interactive graphics, animation, presentations, and web-based application in a graphic design environment.
Detailed Description of Course
This course will use real-world examples to demonstrate and illuminate the potential application of motion graphics and time-based media using the Adobe Flash software platform.
Instruction will include digital color theory, the animation stage and timeline, layers, grouping, frames and key frames, symbols, graphics and movie clips. Students will work with vector and bitmap graphics and explore animation and tweening, text application, basic flash components, action scripting and sound and video applications.
Coursework will also include present-day professional examples and applications, as well as production workflow, the design process, and future potential for the medium (mobile apps, smartphones, etc.).
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
The class will explore motion graphic techniques through instructor demonstrations and presentation of professional tutorials. Students will then be required to create their own original graphics and presentations using those techniques.
Student Goals and Objectives of the Course
Having successfully completed this course, the student will be able to create original time-based and interactive applications that can be used for a variety of commercial and artistic applications.
Students will demonstrate:
• Correct use of design-specific terminology in the oral presentation of their work.
• Skilled use of appropriate media in the creation of their work
• The preparation of proper presentation materials for review
• The use of appropriate responses to professional feedback on their presentation and their work
• The ability to discuss their work in terms of the factors influencing their design (physical, cultural, social, etc.)
• The ability to discuss their work in terms of design process (research, analysis, multiple iterations, evaluation, etc.)
Assessment Measures
Work may be assessed through a combination of quizzes or exams, small and large projects, oral presentations, and written assignments.
Assessment criteria may include:
• Ability to follow directions
• Demonstration of a sound graphic design process
• Demonstration of good decision-making skills regarding design, subject, and audience
• Professional presentation of physical materials
• Articulate oral presentation and discussion
• Demonstration of originality and creativity
• Demonstration of technical proficiency
