ARTS 421: Painting III (2-D)

Prerequisites: ARTS 221 or ART 320

Credits: (3) One hour lecture, demonstration or critique; three hours studio. (2-D)

Emphasis on building visual and aesthetic skills for the development of paintings of a high level of technical and artistic merit.

Detailed Description of Content of Course

Lectures, demonstrations and critiques will provide the student with a conceptual background regarding expressive and technical problem solving, strategies, and students will demonstrate the ability to cope successfully with:

1). The development of paintings of a high level of technical and artistic sophistication.
2). A serial oeuvre of consistent aesthetic merit.
3). Preparation and exhibition of paintings in a professional manner.
4). Critiques dealing with the relationship between expressive goals and content, techniques and presentations.
 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Students will be required to submit a list of painting objectives and problem solving strategies to be explored during the semester. Specific goals will be decided upon by the instructor and the student and will comprise self-directed course objectives.
 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

The student, upon completion of the painting studio will be able to:

1). Distinguish between oil and acrylic.
2). Recognize various painting tools and effects of each (palette, palette knife, brushes, easel, canvas, stretchers, surface preparation).
3). Recognize related career opportunities.
4). Recognize primary, secondary, tertiary, neutral, analogous, complementary, near complementary, monochromatic, and triadic color schemes in painting.
5). Recognize shades, tints, tones, intensity, and value in painting.
6). Distinguish landscape, still life, portrait, abstract, and representational paintings.
7). Recognize good design quality in a painting (movement, dominance, balance, rhythm, harmony, contrast).
 

Assessment Measures

Assessment of the student's success in the course is based on successful review of the student's creation of a serial oeuvre, assigned homework, and individual and group critiques. Students will demonstrate the ability to:

1). Arrange a palette for painting.
2). Prepare a painting surface for acrylic or oil.
3). Use the various painting tools (palette, brushes).
4). Use at least two color schemes (primary, secondary, tertiary, neutral, triadic) in painting.
5). Apply shades, tints, tones, value and intensity.
6). Apply paint to achieve various visual textures with two of the following: brush, palette knife, or rag.
7). Manipulate and distinguish between the use of brushes in different painting areas (acrylic, oil).
8). Recognize the importance of painting as a form of expression through exposure to the work of at least three painters.
