ART 698: Directed Study

Prerequisite: Approval of the advisor, department chair and Directed Study form submitted to the Graduate College

Credit Hours: (1-4) Hours and credit to be arranged

Directed Study courses are offered by several departments and are designed to permit graduate students to investigate independently specific problems or areas of interest under the direction of a faculty advisor.

Before registering for a Directed Study course, the student must submit a written proposal for approval by the supervising professor, the advisor, the department chairperson, the dean of the graduate college. Directed Study courses may be taken either on a pass-fail basis or for a letter grade. A single Directed Study can carry from one to four semester hours of credit. A maximum of six semester hours of credit can be used towards graduation in a degree program.

A student enrolled in a degree program may not take a Directed Study until eligible to file for admission to candidacy. Students electing to do a thesis as part of their degree requirements are not allowed to take Directed Study or an Independent Study as part of the degree program.

Once the nature of the Directed Study is determined by the student and supervising professor, the student will complete six copies of a form available in the graduate college office.

This form includes the purpose and title of the Directed Study, the number of the semester hours of credit to be given for the study, and a brief statement about the nature of the study. This form must be signed by the supervising professor, the student's advisor, the department chairperson and the dean of the college in which the department is located before it is submitted to the dean of the graduate college for final approval.

One copy of the approved Directed Study proposal must be given to the registrar before the student can register for Directed Study. This proposal should be submitted at least two weeks before the end of the semester preceding the semester during which the Directed Study will be performed.
