ATTR 250: Practicum II (Athletic Training)
Prerequisites: ESHE 201, ATTR 205, ATTR 225, ESHE 225, Entrance into ATEP, and cumulative
GPA of 2.75
Corequisites: ATTR 323

Laboratory and clinical experiences designed to provide students with formal instruction and evaluation in the Entry Level Athletic Training Clinical Proficiencies. This course requires the completion of 150 hours of clinical experience performed under the supervision of a program approved Clinical Instructor.
Note(s): Students cannot receive credit for both ESHE 250 and ATTR 250.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
This course is designed to allow the future certified athletic trainer a chance to develop their cognitive, psychomotor and affective skills while interacting in an athletic environment. ATTR 250 offers a concentration in the psychomotor domain areas in lower extremity assessment, rehabilitation and exercise.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Students will meet at the beginning of the semester to be briefed on the conduct required while in the athletic training room and to be advised of the clinical competencies that must be mastered in the course. Students will be required to work with a certified athletic trainer, participate in the coverage of athletic events, and assist in the assessment, rehabilitation and treatment of athletic injuries. At the same time, students will be developing their psychomotor domain skills in lower extremity assessment, rehabilitation and exercise. Students will only be allowed to perform tasks for which competency has been established in oral examinations with the clinical instructor staff or the ATEP program director.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
1. Perform psychomotor tasks used in pre-participation physical examination.
2. Collect and interpret climatic data (temperature, humidity, lightning, etc.).
3. Select, fabricate and apply appropriate preventative taping for the arch, ankle,
great toe, and knee.
4. Construct and apply a posterior splint for an ankle.
5. Select and perform flexibility exercises for the ankle, lower leg, and knee, including
Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF) stretching techniques.
6. Perform a (PNF) strengthening technique for ankle.
7. Demonstrate proper lifting technique for a leg curl, leg extension, leg press and
the proper spotting technique for the parallel squat.
8. Select and fit a mouthpiece.
9. Wrap or pad a hip and groin.
10. Select, fit and instruct an athlete in the use of a cane.
11. Implement the Ememergency Action Plan (EAP) at an activity or event.
12. Appropriately document injuries and rehabilitation.
13. Demonstrate appropriate communication skills with a coach and an athlete.
14. Perform appropriate special tests for foot, ankle, shin, knee and hip conditions.
15. Correctly set up and apply an ice bag, moist heat pack, whirlpool, ultrasound
and electrical stimulation treatment.
16. Instruct an athlete in a functional progression for a lower extremity injury including
progressive running, carioca steps, cross-over steps and figure 8 steps.
17. Instruct an athlete on the proper way to use a bicycle, treadmill, and stair climber
machine.
