COMS 347: Media Production 3B: Editing
Prerequisites: COMS 130, COMS 146 (C- or better), COMS 246, COMS 247; or permission of the instructor.
Corequisites: COMS 346

Instruction in video editing and effects theories and techniques. Training in the
use of digital video editing systems and video effects programs. Practice resolving
hardware and software issues relating to video editing and effects.
Note(s): Applied Learning designated course. Students must enroll in COMS 346 and COMS 347 concurrently.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
Media Production 3B: Editing is designed to familiarize students with various non-linear editing and video effects techniques. Students will apply the theories and techniques discussed in class by editing a variety of production projects which may include public service announcements, advertisements, news packages, short narrative films, etc. which they will record in the corequisite COMS 346: Media Production 3A: Cinematography course. They will also produce various effects projects with pre-recorded video.
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
This course will consist of lectures, discussions, demonstrations, critiques, as well as individualized instruction on editing machines. Students may be asked to read material from a required textbook, watch videos, and/or read articles or selections from books. Students will also work on various production-related assignments in and out of class. Students will be asked to critique the work of others and apply feedback from classmates and instructors to their projects.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
Students will be able to:
1)Identify and describe key concepts of non-linear video editing and effects creation.
2)Demonstrate skills necessary to effectively communicate and collaborate on media productions.
3)Employ theoretical and practical concepts to effectively use audio and video to tell a variety of stories and other narrative productions.
4)Demonstrate proficiency in specific techniques in video editing and effects software.
Assessment Measures
1. Tests covering course content.
2. Laboratory exercises in which students demonstrate a working knowledge of concepts
and processes.
3. Individual editing projects that demonstrate high-quality audio and video production.
