DSN 100

DSN 100: Design Fundamentals

Credit Hours: (3) Six hours studio

An introduction to the elements and principles of design in two- and three-dimensional formats. The design process, including problem solving, creative expression and conceptual thinking, is emphasized.

Note(s): Students cannot receive credit for both DSN 100 and DSN 111.

Detailed Description of Content of Course

This course is an introduction to the theoretical foundations of design and the design process, including: design elements and principles; color theory; spatial composition; graphic identification and visual hierarchy; problem solving within the design process; creativity and ideation; analysis and synthesis. This class also provides:

Opportunities for innovation and creative thinking. (4h)

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Design fundamentals are explored through studio exercises and projects. The studio environment provides hands-on experiences with a wide variety of media. Effort is made to create a climate conducive for creative expression. The student is exposed to a variety of design viewpoints.

Goals and Objectives of the Course

1. To demonstrate creative thinking and originality through presentation of a variety of ideas, approaches, and concepts. (4e)
2. To express ideas clearly in oral and written communication. (6b)
3. To use sketches as a design and communication tool (ideation drawings). (6c)
4. To integrate oral and visual material to present ideas clearly. (6f)
5. To effectively apply the elements, principles, and theories of design to two-dimensional design solutions. (9a)
6. To effectively apply the elements, principles, and theories of design to three-dimensional design solutions. (9b)
7. To analyze and discuss spatial definition and organization. (9c)
8. To demonstrate understanding of color principles, theories, and systems. (10a)
9. Basic skill in applying the analytical thinking aspects of the design process, including problem identification, information gathering, critical and strategic analysis and problem solving.
10. Basic skill in applying the conceptual thinking aspects of the design process, including ideation, creativity, visual and volumetric imagination and concept development.
11. Basic skill in applying appropriate standards for graphic identification and hierarchy in visual communication.
12. Basic skills in applying techniques for effective time management.

Assessment Measures

Studio assignments, including exercises, projects and presentations, will be used to assess student performance. Written and oral critiques, design process evaluations (design matrix), and concept statements comprise an integral part of the evaluation criteria for all projects.
