ECON 311: Economic Development
Prerequisites: ECON 105 and ECON 106

Study of issues, theories and policy alternatives in economic growth and development
of less developed countries, poverty and income distribution, demographic factors,
major theories of growth, resource limitations, development policies and agencies.

Detailed Description of Course
In this course students will study the economic transformation of developing countries.
Students will learn the structure and characteristics commonly associated with developing
economies, and the constraints they face to achieve rapid growth and development.
Students will acquire basic skills and terminology needed to measure and describe
important dimensions and processes of economic development.

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Discuss the "economic growth and development" process. (SLO 5)
2. Describe central issues affecting poor countries in the economic development process. (SLO 5, SLO 6)
3. Evaluate the efficiency and ability of public policy to stimulate economic development. (SLO 5, SLO 6, SLO 7)
Assessment Measures
The following assessment measures may be employed: Tests, quizzes, homework, reports,
presentations, or class participation. Grades and percentages depend on individual
professors.
