III. Credit Hours: 3 credits 

IV. Prerequisites: EDEF 320, EDEF 300, or Instructor Approval.

V. Course Description: Participants in the classroom and behavior management course will develop an understanding of research-based classroom and behavior management techniques, classroom community building, positive behavior supports, and individual interventions. Participants will learn diverse and age-appropriate approaches to classroom management based upon research and best practice.

VI. Detailed Description of Content of the Course:

Participants in the classroom and behavior management course will develop an understanding of research- based classroom and behavior management techniques, classroom community building, positive behavior supports, and individual interventions. These include techniques that promote emotional well-being and teach and maintain behavioral conduct and skills consistent with norms, standards, and rules of the educational environment. Participants will learn diverse and age-appropriate approaches to classroom management based upon culturally responsive behavioral, cognitive, affective, social, and ecological theory and evidence-based practice.

VI. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course:

 This course is conducted with emphasis on practical application of the subject matter through student participation and discussion, individual and group projects and presentations, classroom demonstration, textbook and journal article reading, videos and lectures.

VII. Goals and Objectives of the Course:

Goals, objectives, and assignments in this class are aligned to the Virginia Department of Education

Upon completion of this course the student will:

  1. Identify and explain culturally responsive behavioral, cognitive, affective, social, and ecological theories and practices.
  2. Compare techniques promoting emotional well-being that teach and maintain behavioral conduct and skills consistent with developmentally appropriate norms, standards, and rules of the educational environment.
  3. Apply research-based classroom and behavior management practices, classroom community building, positive behavior supports, and individual interventions using performance data to provide optimal learning opportunities to assist in positive redirection of behavior and the development of social skills, and self-discipline.
  4. Identify and explain how to effectively collaborate and engage with learners, families, and other educators to create a culturally responsive, safe, orderly, equitable, positive, and supportive learning environment in which diversities are valued.
  5. Identify and model age-appropriate and culturally responsive practices such as tiered systems of support, conflict resolution, restorative discipline, and trauma informed classroom management.
  6. Identify and compare various school crisis management and safety plans.

VIII. Assessment Measures:

Assessment measures may include a combination of:

  • Class participation
  • Field activities including data collection necessary to support effective classroom management
  • Individual and group projects
  • Class presentations and demonstrations
  • Case studies
  • Reflective writing
  • Formative and summative measures
