ESHE 115: Beginning Tennis
Credit Hours: (1) Two contact hours per week. 15-week and 7.5-week courses are offered. 7.5-week courses may be blocked together for 2 credit hours.
An introduction to the game of tennis with an emphasis on basic skill development.
Detailed Description of Content of Course
The purpose of this course is to provide students with a thorough understanding of the rules and strategies of the game of tennis. In addition, the students are taught the following skills:
1. basic body positioning and movement about the court
2. basic forehand - racquet grip, topspin, and flat strokes
3. basic backhand - racquet grip, topspin and flat strokes
4. overhead stroke
5. service - beginning punch serve and full stroke serve
Detailed Description of Conduct of Course
Students are given detailed instruction both verbally and by demonstration on how to perform the basic tennis skills. The skills are practiced together as a class until major errors in form are corrected. Each class session begins with either a demonstration or lecture after which the students break up into small groups to practice drills, skills, and games.
Goals and Objectives of the Course
1. to introduce the students to the game of tennis.
2. to have the students gain a degree of skill proficiency which will allow them to
play and enjoy the game of tennis.
3. to have the students develop strong fundamental skills and strategies which can
be built upon to later develop more advanced skills and techniques.
