ESHE 361: World Martial Arts

Analyzes the physical skills and cultural changes affecting the adaptation and development of classical and contemporary martial arts in the United States.
 

Detailed Description of Content of Course

The course examines the major components of the martial arts matrix including: multicultural arts, ranges, personal preferences, instructor preferences, ways of attack. As the student becomes competent in using the matrix, he/she can analyze any martial art in reference to the principles of utilization presented in class. It is intended that each student develop an objective methodology and explore both classical and contemporary systems.
 

Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

Teaching methods may include one or more of the following:

- lectures
- presentations
- video instruction and analysis
- reading assignments  
 

Goals and Objectives of the Course

By the end of the course, students will be able to:

1. Recall the history and application of classical martial arts.
2. Recall the history and application of contemporary martial arts.
3. Debate the principles of multicultural arts.
4. Explain the principles of range and how it affects system selection.
5. Identify the principles of instructor and individual preference and their importance to the objective analysis of systems.
6. Detail examples of ways/angles of attack.
7. Illustrate the development and use of the martial arts matrix.
8. Recognize specific systems of martial arts and be able to demonstrate singular and multiple variations for selected skills.


Assessment Measures

Assessment measures may include one or more of the following:

- exams
- class presentations
- performance evaluation
