ESHE 364: Pre-Professional Fieldwork in ESHE

Prerequisite: Junior standing and instructor’s permission

Credit hours (1-3)

Provides junior level ESHE students with the opportunity to apply acquired knowledge and skills to develop their professional identity and /or professional practice. The course offers students 40-120 hours of on-site work experience applying theory to practice. Students will critically reflect on their learning, abilities, experiences, in their role within professional contexts.

2. Detailed Description of Course

Successful completion of ESHE 364 requires cooperation between the intern, site supervisor, faculty supervisor, and the ESHE fieldwork coordinator. During the field work experience students are expected to function as employees for the selected sites. In addition to typical work efforts, specific written assignments, including weekly work logs, final paper, and other assignments will be required. Students will be introduced to their roles as prospective professionals, and begin to network with other professionals. Students are expected to begin to develop skills that will be pertinent to eventual employment opportunities. Students will be able to integrate course work with their selected fields of employment. Experiences may include, but are not limited to, the following: directing exercise, encouraging patients, operating and maintaining standard equipment, bandaging, administering or observing rehabilitation, observation, front desk tasks, scripted use of telephone using computers and pertinent programs, promotions, advertising, personal training, completing special projects, accounting record keeping and record maintenance. Students are expected to be better prepared to complete the senior level ESHE 463 fieldwork experience after completing the ESHE 364 program. 3. Detailed Description of Conduct of Course

While the primary methods for relaying information will be lecture and discussion, practical and simulated experiences will be employed when appropriate.  Role playing, use of video tape, discussion, questioning, and writing provide for the bulk of information.   
 
4. Goals and Objectives of the Course

The primary method for acquiring knowledge in this course is on-site work experience. Students will be assisted in the tasks by both the site supervisor and the faculty supervisor. Having successfully completed this class, students will:
    1) Demonstrate skills in the application of theory to practical work situations.
    2) Demonstrate skills and techniques directly applicable to potential careers.
    3) Generate employment records/references that will enhance employment opportunities.
    4) Demonstrate knowledge of HIPPA policies and procedures.

5. Assessment Measures

Evaluation techniques may include but not limited to on-site interviews and task performance evaluations, two agency evaluations, performance appraisals by faculty supervisor, and final paper/portfolio assessment.
